¿Cuándo fue la última vez que hiciste algo por la primera vez?

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

~ By Brittany

Here on the island, I have been given many new life experiences. I have had many opportunities to say “this is my first time doing…” During my first month on la Isla I was frequently asked if I had ever been to Mexico before. Now I can finally say ‘YES! This is my first time!’ Life in Mexico on la Isla has exceeded my expectations! I never knew I could fall in love with a city and a people so fast! Living on such a beautiful island makes the shift from life in the USA to life in Mexico a lot easier. Not only am I able to live on an incredible island but I have the opportunity to be a teacher in the public schools. My school here is called Andres Quintana Roo and I am the English teacher in the school for grades 1-6. Being an English teacher motivates me to pursue excellence in myself and in my students. If I want to see my students succeed in the English language then I have to put in the extra time and effort to make sure they get the best education possible. It forces me to make every lesson count; every activity should be interactive and engaging for the students. Being a teacher is another one of my “first.” I appreciate all of my teachers from the university and from high school so much more now that I am in their shoes; I have a higher value for my education now that I am in the teaching position instead of the student. I get excited when I see my students understanding and comprehending and excelling in their learning. Knowing that this education will help the students succeed in their future gives me joy. The students here have shown me unbelievable amounts of love, whether by group hugs from the entire class when I walk in the room or from writing me little notes during class when they are supposed to be paying attention or telling me jokes that don’t make any sense at all or just sitting with me during recess and talking to me. This is definitely something worth pursuing.

In this new year, ask yourself: When was the last time I did something for the first time? Am I living life to the fullest? Am I doing everything in my power to help those around me? Am I making the world a better place? Am I taking risks? Am I making the most of every moment? Am I appreciative of the people around me?

If you answered “no” to any of these questions, don’t just leave it at that. Go out and do something about it. Change your life for the better and while doing that make sure you leave a mark on those with whom you come in contact. Give someone a hug. Smile more. Complain less. Adventure. Travel. Learn. Teach. Eat. Love. Make every day count!
