Living on Isla
~ By Anna
I have officially lived on this beautiful little piece of paradise for almost three weeks now. It’s crazy to think that a month ago, I had no idea that I’d be teaching English on a tiny island off the coast of Mexico. Upon arriving in the golf cart with Tara and Kristen the very first day, I knew that this is exactly where I am supposed to be. Within my short time here so far, I have fallen in love with the island and its people. Strangers have turned into friends, every night brings a new picture-perfect sunset, and swimming with whale sharks is completely normal.
While being interviewed for this opportunity, I was asked what I wanted to get out of this experience. I came up with these three answers:
#1: Improve my Spanish. Whether in daily conversations with the taxi drivers, restaurant workers, new friends from the island, or my new roommate Kristel from Guatemala, my Spanish is tested every single day and is continuously getting better.
#2: Make a difference: whether it’s in the lives of my students, co-workers/roomies, or the random people I meet on the island. My first day at the schools, I was bombarded with hugs, notes, and a plethora of stickers from my new students. Seeing the kids as excited to learn about my language as I am to learn about theirs has been the most incredible thing to experience.
#3: GROW. This year has been a whirlwind of overwhelming change. I graduated from college, went through a breakup, moved back home, and had no idea what I wanted to do/where I wanted to go with my life. Looking back on these three answers of what I want out of this internship, I can confidently say that it is already everything I wanted and more. I already can’t wait for everything else this little piece of paradise has to offer throughout the next four months.
